What Is a W-9 Form? How to Fill It Out
The W-9 Form, officially called Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification, is a U.S. tax form used to provide your correct taxpayer information to a person or business that pays you income.
This form is commonly requested from freelancers, independent contractors, consultants, and vendors.
What Is a W-9 Form?
A W-9 Form is used to collect a person’s or business’s legal name, address, and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), such as a Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN).
The information on a W-9 is later used by the payer to prepare a 1099 Form.
Who Needs to Fill Out a W-9 Form?
You may be asked to complete a W-9 Form if you are:
- An independent contractor or freelancer
- A self-employed individual
- A consultant or professional service provider
- A vendor or supplier
- A landlord receiving rental income
When Is a W-9 Form Required?
A W-9 Form is usually required:
