Two pupils cited for honesty

Two pupils of Maharlika Elem. School received a commendation from Maharlika City Mayor John Reyes in a ceremony held yesterday, for being honest after returning a found wallet containing Php10, 000.00 and important documents to the owner.
Stephanie Mercado and Gretchen Santos, Grade VI-Peace found the wallet along Zamora St. on their way home. These pupils immediately handed the wallet to Mrs. Zenaida Cruz, the school principal.
“The money is not ours, it belongs to someone else” stressed the two girls when asked why they returned the wallet to a lady who was identified by the Maharlika City Police as Mrs. Ligaya Chua, a businesswoman.
When the two girls’ act of honesty was reported to the city mayor, he gave them due appreciation in the presence of the city head office, school officials and guests in a simple ceremony held at the Mayor’s office.
“Honesty still prevails and is still the best policy among our people,” expressed Mayor Reyes.
“Their act of honesty manifested is a reflection of the training these two girls obtained at home and from school,” quoted Principal Cruz.
Mercado and Santos received plaques of commendation and 500.00 each from Mayor Reyes, while Mrs. Chua treated the girls and their parents at the nearby fast food store.

Let us study the structure of the news story?

1.   What is the news all about?
2.   What questions are elicited from the headline?
3.   What questions can be called out from the story?
(Pupils may give questions beginning with WHAT, WHO, WHEN,         WHERE, WHY AND HOW.)

b.    Who were given recognition for their honest deeds?
c.    Do you support the action of the two girls in returning the lost wallet? Justify your answer.

4.   Discuss the structure of the news story.

a. Title of the news story is called the headline. It summarizes the whole story written in a way that could inform and attract readers at a glance.
b. The first paragraph of the news story is called the LEAD. It provides quick identification of persons, places, events, dates and significance for quick understanding of the story. It may or may not answer all the wh-questions in one paragraph. In writing the lead, we follow the one-sentence-one paragraph rule.
What questions can be called out in the lead?

                   Presentation of Paradigm

Tell pupils that after composing the lead the next step is to write the rest of the story. The news story follows the inverted pyramid structure. This means that facts are arranged according to their order of importance. The most important fact must be stated in the lead. The succeeding paragraph must state the next most important facts down the line to the least important.

3.   Generalization
